The Veterinary Health Center (VHC) within the College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applicants for a Small Animal Surgery Veterinary Nursing Supervisor.
This position will serve as a supervisor of staff, student workers, and management of physical equipment in the Small Animal Surgery Service spaces of the Veterinary Health Center.
This includes supervision and scheduling of the On-Call Surgery Team.
Must be able to work alternate shifts.

Duties /
Responsibilities:
Manage Small Animal Surgery OR and Ward 3 Nurses and Assistants:
Supervision of Small Animal Surgery Staff - Manage and assign daily tasks and responsibilities to ensure optimal patient care.
Establish performance standards and goals.
Provide training and feedback.
Manage performance review process.
Coordinate and manage daily staffing, as well as the on-call surgery schedules.
Assist in recruitment and hiring of staff.
Conduct regular staff meetings.
Collaborate with clinicians to ensure effective operation on the unit.
Organize and participate in continuing education opportunities for the staff.
Assist to set standards for proper soft tissue, and orthopedic, veterinary nursing, and assistant circulation in the OR (based on AORN recommendations).
Manage, and direct the supply of general surgery stock, and specialty items.
Assure that needed items are in date and available at all times.
Work with procurement and Central Preparation to reorder and address clinician requests as needed.
As needed, communicate needed adjustments of the Small Animal Surgery tic sheets to appropriate personnel.
Work with Central Preparation, hospital information system and procurement personnel to add items and update pricing.
Work with Central Preparation to ensure all Small Animal Surgery equipment (laser, water blankets, positioning bags, cautery, OR tables, orthopedic power equipment, instruments, endoscopy) are serviced, maintained, and functioning to manufacturer recommendations.
Assist in establishing and maintaining equipment service records.
Develop SOPs for equipment use.
Provide Nursing/Technical and support services for the Surgical Support Services:
Patient Care/Teaching-Participate in a regular work schedule.
Provide care for patients in Small Animal Soft Tissue and Orthopedic Surgery.
Provide primary nursing care and perform treatments for patients as directed by clinician's verbal and/or written orders for each case.
Assist clinicians in treating and performing diagnostic procedures on patients.
Monitor medical records of Small Animal Surgery patients for completeness, accuracy, and financial accountability.
Assist in instruction of veterinary students, and nurse interns.
Plan and implement orientation for new students, staff, house officers and clinicians.
Assess student, nurse intern, and house officer performance.
Participate in clinical research programs as needed.
Assist for Large Animal Surgery procedures as needed Additional Duties:
Be an effective and dependable employee, beginning each day with a clean, neat uniform following standard dress protocol; establishing and maintaining good work habits; maintaining positive, professional relationships with faculty, staff, students and clients; demonstrating behavior that is conducive to harmonious working relationships.
Request and expect the same of the staff and students working in the Small Animal Surgery areas.
Perform other duties as requested by DSSS, VHC Administrative Director or Department Head by following procedures developed for the VHC.
Required Minimum
Qualifications:
Requires graduation from a two-year college program in veterinary or animal technology accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA)Five years or more of veterinary nursing experience, one of those years in a nursing supervisory roleMust possess a drivers license once employedMust be registered as a paraprofessional under the authority of Kansas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners upon employment at the Veterinary Health Center Preferred
Qualifications:
Designation through the AVST (Academy of Veterinary Surgical Technicians) as specialized in the area of surgery (VTS)Computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets and data entryWorking knowledge of human resources management and conflict resolutionStrong oral and written communication skillsCreative problem solvingKnowledge of standard emergency veterinary medical proceduresAbility to work under pressure in emergency situations Physical Requirements:
Position frequently requires light work, including walking and standing while retrieving, and passing supplies, and surgical equipment.
Periods of medium work are required when maneuvering patients, and transporting stock.
Work frequently requires periods of moderate physical exertion to transport patients and supplies 50 lbs or greater.
Walking, sitting, standing, lifting, carrying, fingering, pushing and pulling are necessary to perform various tasks associated with this work area.
Hearing is necessary to send and receive direction and sight is necessary to read orders, records, and requests.
